All I can say is: Duh!

And this is, of course, just the first ten years. The Obama administration argues that Obama’s declared discretionary spending freeze will keep that extra 115 billion dollar potential discretionary spending in check – based on the promise of a veto. And we should believe a promise from Obama because???????

I personally love this line from the CBO: "The Affordable Care Act will reduce the deficit by more than $100 billion in the first decade, and that will not change unless Congress acts to change it," said Kenneth Baer, an OMB spokesman. "If these authorizations are funded, they must be offset somewhere else in the discretionary budget. The president has called for a non-security discretionary spending freeze, and he will enforce that with his veto pen."

That’s right folks. Congress won’t spend the extra money unless Congress decides to spend it, and even if they do, the President will veto that additional spending, even though that additional “discretionary” spending is already called for in the bill that the President signed.

In a related story, I drew an extra $50 in discretionary spending funds from the bank today that I am absolutely not going to spend, unless I decide to spend it, but even if I decide to spend it, my wife might forbid me to spend it, unless I am spending it on something she wants to buy, but that’s ok, because even if I spend that $50 on one thing, I won’t be able to spend it on another, so in no case will I ever actually spend $50 more than I plan to spend.

They must think we’re stupid. Then again, we did vote for this guy. (Well, at least I didn’t).

High Fructose Corn Syrup - a simple case study

A couple of years ago, our family began trying to cut High Fructose Corn Syrup (“HFCS”) out of our lives. Doing so has been pretty difficult, as we have found the stuff even in crackers, but we feel that doing so is important to our long term health.

The other day, I received the below email from a close friend who has had a pretty interesting experience regarding HFCS. Although the experience below is only a single, individual experience, I think it is nonetheless a telling experience. Enjoy…

Thought you might find this interesting. Last August my doctor told me that I'm diabetic. My A1c was 8.7% and it should be at 6.5 or lower. In the morning before eating my blood sugar should be between 80-130 and 2 hours after eating between 140-160. These numbers are not absolute, that is, the lower the better. According to my doctor back when I was in the corps by blood sugar reading was probably around 80 -90 all the time. He put me on a satin drug since then my A1c has dropped to 6.5, by blood sugar readings in the morning are in the 1teens or 120's and at night often in the 90's.

Now for my story. 4 weeks ago on a Monday morning my blood sugar reading was 145. I'm thinking all I had to eat yesterday evening was 2 cheeseburgers, salsa and chips, what the *&^^%$. Next day it's back down. The following Monday by blood sugar is 147. Once again I'm thinking all I had last night was steak, mashed potatoes and vegetables, what the(&*^%$ is going on? Then I get to thinking about this talk I heard where the guy giving it said that eating high fructose corn syrup is like swallowing straight fat. He had a bunch of charts showing how much more fatting that sugar it is. He went so far as to call it poison. He also said the only reason that there is a big campaign going on telling people that it's no different than sugar is because it's cheaper to manufacture. So I get to thinking. On the cheeseburgers and steak I drowned the meat in a discount barbecue sauce that was loaded with high fructose corn syrup. come Sunday evening I again have 2 cheeseburgers with chips, no barbecue sauce and on Monday morning my blood sugar was 118. Next Sunday I have the steak, potatoes, vegetable routine no barbecue sauce next morning my blood sugar was 128. I thought you were alittle off the wall about HFCS, but the blood sugar meter doesn't lie. One other thing I found interesting in this guys speech was he said that if you ever wonder why on a hot day if you drink a Coke or Pepsi your thirst never seems to be satisfied it's because in regular Coke and Pepsi they load it up with salt so you'll drink more trying to quench your thirst and they hide the taste of the salt with high amounts of HFCS. I took a look at a Coke and Pepsi can and the guy was telling the truth. More and more large corporations don't care what they do as long as it puts money in their pockets. Just goes to show you how much you have to stay on top of things these days.

Brett Come Back

For just one more year.

Yes, this is a cheesy post about Brett Favre. More like an open letter, not that he will ever read it.

Due to my religious conversion, I haven’t watched football on Sundays in 14 years, but living in Wisconsin, I heard all about every Packer game every Monday morning and throughout the week. I have either seen or listened to every non-Sunday game Brett Favre has played in during that time (except for those games that have been aired on the NFL Network – what a crock that channel is BTW. Just another reason to dislike Jerry Jones and Co.) Since the advent of the internet and team websites, I have wasted entirely too much time following Brett around cyberspace after and before every game. Frankly, my life would be easier and freer if Brett finally retired, both for the amount of time I waste and the yearly angst over whether his brilliant cannon will eventually misfire once again in the playoffs.

All this time, I, like many other Favre fans have watched throughout the year just hoping to see Brett and his team make one more Superbowl (hey, I wouldn’t watch it on Sunday, but I would sure tape it and get up early to see it before anyone could tell me what happened). Every year we have been disappointed. Almost every year we come away with the feeling that a Superbowl was “this” close, but it hasn’t been since 1996. (I don’t count the 1997 Superbowl because, even though the Pack was there, they couldn’t close the deal). The sad thing is that I think the Vikings defense would have shut Manning down this year, and for the offense to put up 28 points in spite of all their mistakes, well…once again, it was “this” close. I’m actually glad I wasn’t watching this last Sunday. I was sick enough just hearing about it Monday morning.

Regardless of what Brett says, if he goes out now he will not be going out “on top.” He will be going out having been once again almost to the top, and he knows it.

But here’s the thing: I truly believe that Brett and the Vikings can pull it off next near. As deflating as the end of this season was, this Vikings team is still primed for at least one more run, and they have a committed owner who is willing to add whatever pieces are necessary to round out this championship team. An offense that essentially endured training camp during the beginning of the regular season will be even scarier with a year of work behind them. Who knows, maybe Zygi will bring Aaron Kampman over to start opposite Jared Allen, pick up a free agent or two in the secondary, AP might learn how to hang on to the football, and this Viking team will be unstoppable with Brett Favre at the helm.

Even if they stand pat, on any other day but last Sunday, the Vikings have the firepower to beat any team in the NFL. The Saints go into this Superbowl knowing that they didn’t beat the Vikings. The Vikings (and a few lousy refs) beat the Vikings. The Saints will go on to lose to the Colts in a blowout in a couple of weeks, but if Favre comes back next year, it will be the Vikings who march through to the Superbowl and win it all.

Brett, you have one more year left on your contract with the Vikings. Please come back. For one more run. We know you can do it. We know you can. Besides, wouldn’t it be great to stick to ol’ Ted, just one more time? (Well, actually twice, and maybe once again in the playoffs, but who’s counting?) And just once I would love to have all the Favre haters and naysayers actually have to shut up instead of just staying quiet long enough to have something else to talk about. Just once I’d like to have Homer here at ESPN in Wisconsin have to eat his hate served cold on a Monday morning after a Superbowl – but beyond all of that, we just want to see you play, one more time. Come on back Brett, because we all don’t just want to know you can do it, we want to see you do it, and deep down inside, you know you want to see it too. Come on back Brett, because we all know that you have one more season, one more Superbowl in you. Brett, come back, for just one more year.

As I mentioned previously, I recently contacted my senators regarding the lack of transparency in the Health “Reform” negotiating process.

Senator Feingold’s initial reply mentioned in passing that he was “disappointed” with the lack of transparency.

I replied urging Senator Feingold to can the “disappointment” nonsense and actually DO something about it. (You can see my reply in an earlier post, below).

Today, I received an email from Senator Feingold (below), with an attached report generally discussing the constitutionality of the pending health care “reform” bill.

Is it that hard to get good help these days, or do they really just not care?

The other day I emailed Senator Kohl expressing my concern over the lack of transparency in the negotiation process for Obamacare.

Maybe I’m a bit slow, but nowhere in the Senator’s canned reply do I even see an inference to the substance of my letter.

This leaves me to wonder whether the intern in charge of responding to constituents’ letters mistakenly selected the wrong canned message as the reply, or if Senator Kohl only has one canned message to reply to such emails as mine, and really could give a rip about my concern.

Dear Mr.:

Thank you for taking the time to contact me regarding health reform. I appreciate your interest in this very important issue.

Congress has made great strides towards reforming America's health care system. On November 7, 2009 the House passed the "Affordable Health Care for America Act," and on December 24, 2009 the Senate passed the "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act." Both of these bills would expand coverage to the majority of Americans, curb the rising cost of health care, cut the deficit and improve the quality and efficiency of our health care system.

Debate on the Senate health reform bill has been passionate and at some points daunting; passage was the result of long negotiations and the culmination of more than a decade of work. This bill takes major steps in the process of cutting health care costs, while maintaining quality and expanding coverage. This bill will cover 94 percent of Americans under 65 and provide coverage for more than 31 million of the uninsured, cut the deficit by $132 billion in the first ten years and roughly $1.3 trillion over the second ten years.

I am pleased with the direction we are moving with this bill. Many of the important insurance reforms will begin as soon as the President signs the final health reform bill; insurers will be prohibited from putting a cap on lifetime benefits and will no longer be able to rescind coverage when you become sick, children will be allowed to stay on their parents plan until age 26, and small businesses will receive tax credits to make covering their employees more affordable. These are just a few of the provisions that will begin to immediately help improve our health system.

For Wisconsin, the bill will provide additional federal funds for BadgerCare, alleviating some of the burden on our state budget and preserving access to care that many in Wisconsin depend on. Additionally, the bill will provide free preventive services for over 870,000 seniors in Wisconsin and will extend the solvency of Medicare for an additional decade.

I was pleased that a number of my bills were included in the bill passed by the Senate. These include the Nursing Home Transparency and Improvement Act, the Patient Safety and Abuse Prevention Act, the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, Medicare Payment Improvement Act of 2009, as well as provisions from the Retooling the Health Care Workforce for an Aging America Act. My hope is that these are included in the final health reform bill passed by Congress.

Work remains to be done before we pass a final health reform bill. Now that both the House and Senate have passed their respective bills, we will be tasked with merging the two versions of health reform. There are a number of differences between the two bills, but I am confident we will soon send a bill to the President to sign. I look forward to improving upon the bill with my colleagues in Congress until final passage.

An Open Letter to Senator Russ Feingold

I recently contacted Senator Feingold about the utter lack of transparency in the current health care “reform” process. In his reply, Senator Feingold expressed his “disappointment” that the negotiations were occurring behind closed doors. I am always skeptical when someone in a position of power expresses concern, yet offers no resolve in the face of that concern. Below is my reply to Senator Feingold:

Dear Senator Feingold,

You stated:

“I am disappointed that the final bill will not be negotiated by a formal conference committee in public.”

Yeah? So what are you going to DO about it?

Like the majority of your constituents, I didn’t want you to support this bill in the first place. I don’t want a public option (which you maintain support for), and I certainly don’t want to open the back door to a single payer system, as this final bill will be designed to do. This entire process has been a farce and an indignity to U.S. Citizens, and an affront to the U.S. Constitution. The least you could do is ACTUALLY HONOR YOUR ELECTED POST AND TAKE ACTION TO ENSURE THAT THE NEGOTIATION OF THIS FARCE IS TRANSPARENT. Where are all the so-called leaders in Washington who ought to be holding the President and others responsible for their promise of transparency? Is the passing of this monstrosity so important that principle be made subservient to purpose, even when that purpose is largely unwanted by your constituents? In this case, your inaction, your quiet acquiescence to the lack of transparency makes you just as guilty of the same. Words mean nothing. SHOW ME THAT YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT TRANSPARENCY, SENATOR. SHOW ME.

Expect that all sewn garments will vary slightly in size from piece to piece. The orange footed pajamas are machine washable and will most likely shrink .5 to 1.5 inches depending on how you wash them. Because of this expect that the measurements above are very close, but not exact!

Your thoughts are right on. In fact, this approach has been underway nationwide for a few years now. Homosexual activists have been organizing political campaign funds on a national scale and funneling it into state AND LOCAL elections for the express purpose of knocking pro-family politicians out of positions of office and grooming political leaders who support the homosexual agenda for the state and national stage.

What we saw in Maine is just the “tip” of an “iceberg” that is already partially formed beneath the national radar.

The article talks about yesterday's vote in Maine to ban gay marriage. People voting to ban it won but what it says below I found very interesting.

"That decision has been cited in numerous cases that have followed, as the number of states whose courts have demanded equal marriage rights for gays has grown. But those same cases have also helped fuel opponents, who argue gay marriage is being foisted upon America by out-of-touch judges. In order to counter that argument, Bonauto and other gay-marriage activists in Maine who began organizing to press for gay marriage in Maine decided to avoid taking the issue to court. Instead, they set about electing lawmakers friendly to their cause two years ago, and this year successfully convinced the legislature to become the nation's first to establish gay marriage by statute, rather than decree. "Frankly, we had heard the criticisms about going the court route, and so we said, 'Fine, we'll go to the legislature,'" says Bonauto. "And it has been an incredible campaign." The article talks about how the popular vote has won out every single time that it has been put to the people and activists who are campaigning for gay marriage rites can see that they are not going to win by popularity...at least not now. They also know, as it states in the article, that it is difficult for them to win when "out-of-touch judges" enforce gay marriage onto the public. Realizing this, they are taking a more long term route but it looks like it may be a more effective one.

They are focusing their efforts on ELECTING representatives who are "friendly to their cause" in hopes of ushering in gay marriage as a "statute rather than a decree". They know that they cannot win with a popular vote because this is an issue that has gotten people like us off of the couch and out to vote. However, they are counting on us to not put in the effort to find and elect candidates who will represent us. Who cares if the majority of the people in our voting districts oppose gay marriage...or any other social, economic or political topic. If they can get a representative who supports them on their issues then it looks as though that is what the people want. This is why our representatives vote on most things because it is supposed to be a good indicator of what the people want.

Sorry if I am getting all political and long winded. If you find yourself reading this message and disagreeing with me then that is fine and I am sorry that I have wasted your time. I respect your opinion and stance on such touchy issues but this is just something that I feel strongly about and thought that I would share.

Bottom line is that it is easy to show up and vote for one topic in one election but let’s be the kind of politically active people who begin working two years in advance to ensure that we get people in office who will represent us. We often complain that our country is being taken over yet we have the power to seek out and elect people that we feel represent us in the best way possible. If you are already doing this then thank you and keep it up. If not, hopefully I have given you something to think about.

Reply to the President, How about that "political back and forth"

Perhaps this is a bit more terse than I ought to be, but I get a bit peeved when I hear people make certain arguments that disenginuinely contradict their own actions (read: hypocrisy cheeses me off).

I was therefore a bit bothered when I received a mass email today from President Barack Obama, supporting his recent nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, Judge Sotomayor. Not that I disagree with such marketing tactics in politics (though such is often carried too far, IMO). After all, Mr. Axelrod (sp?) is a P.R. guy.

What bothers me is that Obama touts, not only her strong record, intellect, and experience (all without offereing any substantive proof of such, I might add - and he conventiently omitted the dismal record of her rulings that have been appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, but I digress again), but that he also touts her personal history as a qualification for the bench. He then made the following statement, which quite "set me off."

"It's important for these hearings to be about Judge Sotomayor's own record and her capacity for the job — not any political back and forth that some in Washington may use to distract you."

I include my reply below, as well as the actual letter from the President. I suppose I should have addressed the reply cordially, and I feel bad for not doing so. He is the President, after all, even if hypocritically...

My reply:

You mean, like choosing a Latin female as a nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court, largely because that candidate is Latin and female, and then arguing that because you are the President, the Senate should consent to that nomination without further inquiry into her judicial record, temperament, and philosophy; like arguing that somehow “empathy” is an important qualification for a Justice charged with impartially interpreting and upholding a Federal Constitution; like citing a laudable personal history of overcoming adversity as a reason to give someone the power to apply that Constitution, with a binding effect, to issues that will affect all Americans in varying degrees?

Yep, no “political back and forth” there, Mr. President.

And what about the “political back and forth” you engaged in when you were a Senator and President Bush nominated a certain Latin man, Mr. Estrada, to the federal bench? I suppose you are above that now that you are a President actually making the appointment…

As President, there are few responsibilities more serious or consequential than the naming of a Supreme Court Justice, so I want to take this opportunity to tell you about the qualifications and character that informed my decision to nominate Judge Sotomayor.

Judge Sotomayor's brilliant legal mind is complemented by the practical lessons that can only be learned by applying the law to real world situations.

In the coming days, the hearings will cover an incredible body of work from a judge who has more experience on the federal bench than any incoming Supreme Court Justice in the last 100 years. Judge Sotomayor's professional background spans our judicial system — from her time as a big-city prosecutor and a corporate litigator, to her work as a federal trial judge on the U.S. District Court, and an appellate judge on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

To Heck with Freedom from Religion!

Great radio clip. Peter Heck makes some great points here. I don't agree with how he made his final point, but I very much agree with the substance of his arguments. The establishment clause is written the way it is because the founding fathers wanted to foster an environment in which religion could thrive based on individual conscience, and without dictation from the federal government (I will omit any potentially lengthy discussion of the operation of the 14th amendment on state government and the subsequent incorporation of, inter alia, the 1st amendment as against the states - suffice it to say that the first amendment was initially intended to operate solely against the federal, and not the state governments).

In any case, the establishment clause of the first amendment was a brilliant, although relatively recently twisted attempt to protect religion and federal government from eachother, with the intent of fostering the healthy coexistence of them both. Sad to see so many these days using the establishment clause as a club to pound religion from our societal conscience, but I digress.

Counter Surge?

In a surge movement that runs almost exactly counter to the strategy which the Obama-Biden ticket ardently argued they would employ in Afghanistan, because they argued that a surge similar to that employed in Iraq would not work, U.S. troops in Afghanistan are set to reach the same levels as that in the Iraqi surge, while operating under similar principles. (I don’t have time to dig up the old footage, but in addition to Obama continuing to put down the Iraqi surge and arguing that a different strategy was needed in Afghanistan, I distinctly remember one Joe Biden chiding Palin in their VP debate for supporting the use of “surge principles” in Afghanistan because certain “experts” said it would not work.)

A LETTER FROM LAURA... Dear Children,I was born in the "Little House in the Big Woods" of Wisconsin on February 7 in the year 1867. I lived everything that happened in my books. It was a long story, filled with sunshine and shadow, that we have lived since "These Happy Golden Years." After our marriage Almanzo and I lived for a little while in the little gray house on the tree claim. In the year 1894 we and our little daughter Rose left Dakota in a covered wagon and moved to a farm in the Ozarks. We cleared the land and built our own farmhouse. Eventually we had 200 acres of improved land, and a herd of cows, good hogs, and the best laying flock of hens in the country. For many years we did all our own work, but now almost all of the land has been rented or sold. For recreation we used to ride horseback or in our buggy - later on, our Chrysler. We read and played music and attended church socials. In 1949 Almanzo died at the age of 92. We had been married 63 years. Our daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, the novelist, now lives in Connecticut. You may be interested to know what happened to some of the other people you met in my books. Ma and Pa lived for a while on their homestead then moved into town where Pa did carpentry. After Mary graduated from the College for the Blind she lived at home. She was always cheerful and busy with her work, her books and music. Carrie worked for THE DE SMET NEWS for a while after finishing high school, and then she married a mine owner and moved to the Black Hills. Grace married a farmer and lived a few miles outside DeSmet. All of them have been dead for some years now. Several years before Almanzo's death he and I took a trip back to DeSmet for a reunion with our old friends. Many of the old buildings had been replaced. Everywhere we went we recognized faces, but we were always surprised to find them old and gray like ourselves, instead of being young as in our memories. There is one thing that will always remain the same to remind people of little Laura's days on the prairie, and that is Pa's fiddle. Every year at a public concert, someone plays on it the songs Pa used to play. The "Little House" books are stories of long ago. Today our way of living and our schools are much different; so many things have made living and learning easier. But the real things haven't changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with the simple pleasures and to be cheerful and have courage when things go wrong. Great improvements in living have been made because every American has always been free to pursue his happiness, and so long as Americans are free they will continue to make our country ever more wonderful.

Letter to my Senators: Please Vote NO on S.909, the federal "Hate Crimes" bill

Perhaps you have heard about this bill. Already passed by the House of Representatives, this bill would make members of the LGBT community a federally protected class. It is an unconstitutional attempt to stifle open opposition to the gay lifestyle, and is ultimately another step in this administration’s goal to enshrine a perverse lifestyle in federal garb, and to force acceptance of such by all citizens.

I am a little behind time with my letter, as the Senate is likely to vote on this soon. Here is the letter I sent to my Senators. Perhaps you may want to write to your as well.

Dear Senator,

I am writing to ask that you please VOTE NO on S.909, the so called "hate crimes" legislation.

This legislation is nothing more than an attempt to federalize unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination across the United States, and is another step designed to force acceptance of a perverse lifestyle upon all U.S. Citizens, all under the banner of federal law.

Violent crimes are already severely punishable in all 50 states. Legislators or special interest groups who attempt to circumvent the 10th Amendment BAR to such vicious legislation do so without any real proof that such crimes are not already prosecuted to the full extent of the law, or that such extents of the law fail to reach far enough.

To claim that sexual "orientation" requires special protection or ought to be a congressionally mandated suspect class is a travesty of justice and logic, and is an affront to the intelligence of the average American.

That the House of Representatives has already succumbed to this socially engineered nonsense frankly scares the heck out of me, and I hope and pray that I can count on my U.S. Senators to act with some intelligence and maturity in refusing to pass this nonsensical, unconstitutional drivel that is designed, not for protection, but instead is designed to attack and undermine the moral values upon which this country was built.

The moral foundations of this society are eroded enough. Enshrining the consistent dribbling of such acid upon our moral footings in federal law is dangerous and irresponsible. Please VOTE NO on S.909.

Good books! & Good insight!

As our family reading book we have been reading "the little house on the prarie" series. I have really enjoyed them! and my children have really enjoyed them also! : )

We have been reading "Farmer Boy". Which is the third book in the series. It gives such good insight of how it was back in the 1870's and 1880's. I would like to share one of my favorite quotes... "Haste makes waste, but a lazy man'd rather get his work done fast than do it himself. ... All it saves is time, son. And what good is time, with nothing to do?"

I have been thinking about that quote and our daily tasks, ie: loading and unloading the dishwasher, etc. If I would just wash the dishes I could use them right away versus if i put them in the dishwasher I have to wait for three hours before they are done.

The other thing I have thought about in this book is that the cobbler (shoe maker) would come to your house and stay with you and make you shoes to fit your foot perfectly or the school teacher would live with each of the students families for two weeks and rotate through the whole class. Then the term would be over. It was a different lifestyle. But I like it more than our disconnected society now. I don't even see my neighbors and they are just a hop skip and a jump away.

I have been wrestling with what to do with immodest clothing that is given to us. Which is normally girls clothes. : (

Sometimes, if there is enough fabric, I am able to alter them and make them into something modest. But if I couldn't alter them. I didn't feel right passing it on to someone else. Nor did I feel right in donating them or destroying them.

But finally I was given insight to make a quilt with them! I will post pictures when I complete it.

California Supreme Court Upholds State Constitutional Same Sex Marriage Ban

Apparently the amendment was legally sufficient, but the 18,000 same sex “marriages” that occurred between the time California courts struck down the previous statutory same sex marriage ban and the time the State Constitutional Marriage Amendment was passed remain valid. Huh?

While many may see this as a sign that the California courts finally got something right, what has really happened here is the planting of the seeds for the eventual popular overturning of prop eight. No way would the California Supreme Court ever have the guts to strike down the State Amendment, even though its substance would purportedly violate the “reasoning” (and I use the term loosely) upon which the earlier statutory ban was struck down (the court at that time relied primarily on the U.S. Supreme Court case of Texas v. Lawrence, which heinously struck down Texas’ sodomy laws). What the California court did have the guts to do was uphold those 18,000 marriages that occurred in the interim.

Unless Californians find a way to invalidate those purported “marriages” as well, I give the state no more than 5 years before prop 8 is overturned by popular vote. The reason is simple. Homosexuals in California, although temporarily stupefied by their own hatred and intolerance, are not stupid. They’re simply passionate about wanting to force their lifestyle on the rest of society. Here is what will happen now, they will lie low for a few months, and then they will slowly and quietly begin a subtle marketing campaign that can be explained in one simple statement: “See, our marriage does not affect you.” They will patiently and quietly run this campaign until the polls reflect a societal acceptance great enough to overturn prop 8. Then, and only then, will they seek to exert their influence to force acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle on the rest of California. That is when things will finally get “ugly,” for those who understand the essential nature of and support true marriage, but by then it will be too late because the majority of Californians will have already become blind to the danger.

Sounds a bit apocalyptic, I know. Probably sounded a bit that way to the residents of Sodom and Gomorrah as well. 5 years. Unless Californians are vigilant, I give it five years.

Race and Gender and the U.S. Supreme Court Bench

Just a quick thought on Obama’s recent nomination of a Hispanic female to the U.S. Supreme Court. Every article I see and every string of comments I see about this on the web includes some comment about the historic nature of appointing the first Latino and the third ever woman to the U.S. Supreme Court. I even noticed one article titled “Latinos Rejoice in Sotomayor Nomination.” available at http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/.

Excitement over the race and gender of a Supreme Court nominee is all well and good, but how about a balanced dialogue about her qualifications and her approach to the role of a judge in the American Common Law system – particularly about her understanding of the role of the judiciary in interpreting and applying the U.S. Constitution?

Contrary to President Obama’s misguided rhetoric, those qualifications do not and should not have anything to do with the current nominee’s “compassion” and “feelings” – two words with dangerously variable interpretations and applications that have nothing to do with interpreting and applying the U.S. Constitution, and everything to do with individual perspective and preference. Of course, Judge Sotomayor already understands that. As she explained in a 2001 speech, “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life." Frankly, I prefer Chief Justice Roberts’ explanation of his role in the judiciary. When visiting the B.Y.U. School of Law about a year and a half ago, a student asked how Justice Roberts’ judicial philosophy affects his role on the bench. The reply? “When a case involves a statute, I begin by reading the statute and discovering what it says.”

And how about the strength of her opinions that have been reviewed by the U.S. Supreme Court? Of the at least eight opinions authored by Judge Sotomayor that have been reviewed by the U.S. Supreme court, 6 have been overturned, one is currently on review (in that case Judge Sotomayor held that a firefighter promotion test was invalid because not enough minorities passed it), and in the one that was upheld, “Sotomayor’s legal reasoning was panned in the opinion signed by the entire court.” Robert Yoon, CNN Research Director, Past Sotomayor rulings faced tough crown on high court, available at http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/.

Feelings? Yeah, I’ve got a feeling, and it’s not a good one, but what do I know about the judicial role in upholding the rule of law in these United States? I’m just a white male. I’ve never “lived that life.”

"Political correctness has replaced religion from our schools to our courtrooms to our beauty pageants. One must not ever been seen to give offense, even if to do so is to offend one's self. And an argument can be made that the so-called "gay agenda" isn't so much about equality as it is about superiority. Translation: "Regardless of what a person believes, success should depend only upon that person's ability to tell people what they want to hear."

Wow.

I'll take a politically incorrect individual with integrity any day over an individual who simply parrots what another wants to hear for fear of censure or for personal gain.

Mr. Hilton went on to explain:

“Do we want a Miss USA that's politically insensitive, that's politically offensive? No,” Hilton said. “So I didn't disagree with her not believing in the right for gays and lesbians to good evening equal under the law. I disagree with how she answered the question because Miss USA should be all inclusive. She should be my Miss USA and when she answered that question that way, it was instantly divisive and alienating to gays and lesbians and friends and supporters.”

Really? It seems to me that the divisiveness here stems from requiring everyone to conform to a radical viewpoint rather than seeking open and honest dialogue about how people really feel and why they really feel that way.

Mr. Hilton went on to invite Miss. California out for coffeee to explain his views to her and to disabuse her of her own viewpoint. Ironic, eh? Her viewpoint is not acceptable, yet she should provide Mr. Hilton with an intimate setting in which to further express his own.

Memo to Mr. Hilton: openly censuring and hurling vitriolic remarks at an individual is NOT an effective way to open a dialogue - but that's just the point, isn't it? Mr. Hilton is not interested in dialogue. Facism seems a better fit for him.

I recognize the Larry King is not known for asking the "tough" questions, but c'mon Larry! How could you let this guy off on this point? If you are going to extend the credibility to interview on your show, you ought to at least have the personal and journalistic credibility to call Mr. Hilton on his blatant, intolerant hypocrisy.

I really don't have time to elaborate, but in a country where those who support maintaining the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman are increasingly labeled as intolerant, recent events surrounding Miss. California's response to the "same sex marriage" question from Mr. Hilton are a good, anecdotal illustration of wherein the real intolerance lies - vitrulent intolerance at that.

Whatever you do, Miss. California, please do not qualify your statement or your position. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

Why do we "judge" a book by its cover?

I watched the youtube clip of Suzanne Boyle from "Britain's got Talent". I was surprised at how the judges and the audience notably were "against" her before she sang. This was even stated by the judge. Because of her looks she is suppose to be hated or mocked! How sad! She is a child of God. She has feelings. Thankfully she was "successful" so that she did not walk off the stage with tears and a worst self esteem. This is the reason why I do not watch these types of shows. You can never draw bees with vinegar only with honey. What if these shows had a different approach? Maybe those "Suzanne Boyles" would be more, because they would feel supported soon as they came on stage NOT attacked OR "the enemy" just by how they look.

She has a beautiful voice. I hope she succeeds and still remembers who she is. : )

Apparently the Vermont Senate (from that state that recently passed legislation that redefined marriage to include unions between persons of the same sex) just passed legislation that would make "consensual" "sexting" by teenagers no longer a criminal offense.

Because the penalties for youth who send pornographic pictures of themselves via cell phones are apparently too harsh, the Vermont Senate has determined that the act should not be criminal at all.

Hey, why shouldn't two "consenting" 13 to 19 year olds feel perfectly free to snap and send portraits of their privates to each other?

In related news, Vermont is considering a permanent name change to Sodom & Gomorrah...

A Tax Thought on Tax Day...

While I don't necessarily agree with the CATO Institute's push for a flat or sales tax based system (the "all of Europe" is doing it so we should too argument is actually insulting to anyone of even average intelligence, as are the somewhat misleading policy reasons offered for a flat or sales tax), I am in total agreement with this one truth implied in the clip: our U.S. Tax system ought not to be used as a vehicle for implementing federal policy. As a matter of fact, if we really wanted to simplify the tax code, while maintaining our current system of taxing on a sliding scale, all we have to do is simply quit taxing based on policy directives. Period.

The article is probably a bit long to read, but the gist of it is that the fellow who made God's Army and some of those other early commercial "LDS" movies left the church. (Actually, the article is a couple of years old, but I'm slow...) The irony in it, if you read the article, is that some of the very approaches to filmmaking that Mr. Dutcher proposes current LDS filmmakers embrace appear to be some of the direct reasons why he is now choosing to leave the church.

While the art of LDS filmmaking has certainly exuded a disproportionate amount of cheesiness in the past, encouraging LDS filmmakers to "Passionately adhere to the guideline that it is better to tell an R-rated truth than a G-rated lie" not only expresses a wickedly false dillemma, but also belies Mr. Dutcher's expression of continued support for the LDS church notwithstanding his leaving it. Encouraging a generation of artists to trade their souls for their craft in the name of a false dillemma is hardly support, and is defenitely not any defense of the gospel, but is instead a subtle, backhanded betrayel of those very values Mr. Dutcher purports to simultaneously publicly acknowledge & personally reject.

Joseph Smith expressed it the best when a Brother Behunan (sp?) once stated that if he ever left the church he would leave it alone and would go somewhere where he would not interfere with the work. The prophet's response? "You do not know what you would do." He explained that if you leave the church it can only be under the influence of the evil one, whose sworn purpose is to destroy the work of God.

I for one am confident that faithful members of the LDS church can and will produce film and other art of the utmost quality that is also wholesome. I for one am confident that G rated truth is a noble goal. Shouldn't those two words, "quality" and "wholesome" really be synonymous anyway?

Leftist students have learned from leftist administrators that they have an absolute right to be intolerant in the name of tolerance.

This article from the U.K. is strong proof that it ain't about civil rights folks. It's about forcing someone else's immorality upon society. It's about the eventual destruction of families, religious freedoms, and parental rights. Methinks such stories as the below are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to "recognizing" "gay rights" in America. Consider the following quote from within the article: "when it comes to so-called tolerance, the new, intolerant state religion of 'diversity' trumps the old religions any day of the week." Sound familiar anyone???

Education, education, education. How's that going? Let's take a snapshot of the state of our schools. For instance, here's three stories from the past few days. Official figures revealed that nearly half of all children from low-income families fail to achieve a single pass at GCSE.

More than 42 per cent of the 75,000 pupils entitled to free lunches last year could not manage a single 'C' grade in any subject, which is the minimum level recognised by potential employers. As many as 7,500 of them are classified as 'persistent truants'.

They left school virtually unemployable, fit only for a life on benefits or a career in crime. These were the very children Labour came to office promising a better future, pledging to raise them out of a cycle of permanent low achievement.

Twelve years on and billions of pounds squandered later, they're still bottom of the heap.

Yesterday, another report showed that despite the Holocaust supposedly being an integral part of the National Curriculum, an alarming number of secondary-school children think Auschwitz is a brand of beer. Six out of ten had never heard of the Final Solution. They probably think it's some kind of washing powder.

Against this horrifying backdrop, you might think any drive to elevate history teaching in schools and clamp down on truants would be welcome.

So, on the face of it, you'd applaud the decision by Waltham Forest Council to prosecute parents who fail to send their children to school.

More than 30 pupils were absent without leave last week at the George Tomlinson Primary School, in Leytonstone, East London, one of the country's most deprived areas.

Waltham Forest is treating this as mass truancy and says parents could be dragged into court, fined and forced to sign parenting contracts.

But these aren't the usual feckless mothers and absentee fathers content to let their children bunk off school. They are deeply moral and religious people who object to their children being force-fed homosexual propaganda in the classroom.

As such, they exercised their right to withdraw their sons and daughters from lessons 'celebrating' Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month.

Devout Christian and Muslim parents had warned the school in advance that they had strong religious objections.

Pervez Latif, a 41-year-old accountant, kept his nine and ten-year-old sons at home and is now facing prosecution. He wrote to the chairman of the school governors, but his protests were ignored.

Sarah Saed, 40, withdrew her eight-year-old daughter with great reluctance. It was the first blemish on her 100 per cent attendance record. 'This was the only choice I had,' she said. 'It is not an appropriate age for children to be learning about homosexual relationships.'

As the law stands, parents have the legal right to exempt their children from religious education and sex lessons. That's why this is being smuggled in under the radar in the guise of 'history'.

Yet the 'lessons' on offer include a story called King & King - about a prince who turns down three princesses before falling in love with their brother - and another featuring a pair of gay penguins at a New York zoo.

Regular readers may remember these fairy stories from a couple of years ago, when they were part of a £600,000 government-sponsored project designed to peddle gay propaganda to children as young as five.

What has any of this got to do with 'history'?

It's about as historical as Andy Pandy. (Come to think of it, I'm surprised the relationship between Andy and Teddy isn't being explored as part of gay history month. Goodness knows what they got up to in that box.)

And why a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender month, anyway? Why not a Foot Fetishists, Spankers, Sadists and Masochists History Month?

Risibly, Waltham Forest said that action was being taken against the parents as part of a policy of 'promoting tolerance'.

So why not tolerate parents who, for sincerely-held reasons, consider their children too young to be taught about gay relationships?

That's because when it comes to so-called tolerance, the new, intolerant state religion of 'diversity' trumps the old religions any day of the week. (emphasis added)

Parents who choose to tell their children about homosexuality only when they feel the time is right have to be pummelled into submission, using the full might of the law if necessary.

This isn't education, it's cultural fascism.

As I've written before, I have no problem with homosexuality being discussed in secondary schools. But not with children who won't even hit puberty for another few years. Let them enjoy their innocence, for heaven's sake.

And what about some respect for decent, law-abiding parents, trying to bring up their children in line with their own belief system?

Instead of hounding caring mums and dads like Pervez Latif and Sarah Saed, the education establishment should be targeting the tens of thousands of selfish, wastrel parents who never send their children to school.

Rather than filling the heads of impressionable boys and girls with fatuous drivel about gay penguins, schools should be ashamed of the fact that they are sending children out into the world barely able to read, write and add up properly.

Labour's deranged obsession with social engineering over genuine education has betrayed an entire generation, especially those unfortunate enough not to be blessed with conscientious, loving parents like Pervez Latif and Sarah Saed.

Is it any wonder some leave school unable to tell the difference between a concentration camp and a can of lager?

There was a bit of King Lear in the scene on the Senate floor, a stormy, solitary John McCain on “this great stage of fools,” as the Bard wrote, railing against both parties and the president in fiery speeches and rapid-fire tweets.

“He’s mad that trusts in the tameness of a wolf, a horse’s health, a boy’s love, or a whore’s oath,” the Fool told Lear.

And he’s truly mad that trusts in the promise of a presidential candidate to quell earmarks.

The 72-year-old senator who seemed hopelessly 20th century when he confessed during the campaign that he didn’t know how to use a computer or send an e-mail has now mastered the latest technology fad, twittering up a twizzard to tweak his former rival.

Before the Senate resoundingly defeated a McCain amendment on Tuesday that would have shorn 9,000 earmarks worth $7.7 billion from the $410 billion spending bill, the Arizona senator twittered lists of offensive bipartisan pork, including:

• $2.1 million for the Center for Grape Genetics in New York. “quick peel me a grape,” McCain twittered.

• $1.7 million for a honey bee factory in Weslaco, Tex.

• $1.7 million for pig odor research in Iowa.

• $1 million for Mormon cricket control in Utah. “Is that the species of cricket or a game played by the brits?” McCain tweeted.

• $819,000 for catfish genetics research in Alabama.

• $650,000 for beaver management in North Carolina and Mississippi.

• $951,500 for Sustainable Las Vegas. (McCain, a devotee of Vegas and gambling, must really be against earmarks if he doesn’t want to “sustain” Vegas.)

• $2 million “for the promotion of astronomy” in Hawaii, as McCain twittered, “because nothing says new jobs for average Americans like investing in astronomy.”

• $167,000 for the Autry National Center for the American West in Los Angeles. “Hopefully for a Back in the Saddle Again exhibit,” McCain tweeted sarcastically.

• $238,000 for the Polynesian Voyaging Society in Hawaii. “During these tough economic times with Americans out of work,” McCain twittered.

• $200,000 for a tattoo removal violence outreach program to help gang members or others shed visible signs of their past. “REALLY?” McCain twittered.

• $209,000 to improve blueberry production and efficiency in Georgia.

“When do we turn off the spigots?” Senator McCain said in his cri de coeur on the Senate floor. “Haven’t we learned anything? Bills like this jeopardize our future.”

In one of his disturbing spells of passivity, President Obama decided not to fight Congress and live up to his own no-earmark pledge from the campaign.

He’s been lecturing us on the need to prune away frills while the economy fizzles. He was slated to make a speech on “wasteful spending” on Wednesday.

“You know, there are times where you can afford to redecorate your house and there are times where you need to focus on rebuilding its foundation,” he said recently about the “hard choices” we must make. Yet he did not ask Congress to sacrifice and make hard choices; he let it do a lot of frivolous redecorating in its budget.

He reckons he’ll need Congress for more ambitious projects, like health care, and when he goes back to wheedle more bailout billions, given that A.I.G. and G.M. and our other corporate protectorates are burning through our money faster than we can print it and borrow it from the ever-more-alarmed Chinese.

Team Obama sounds hollow, chanting that “the status quo is not acceptable,” even while conceding that the president is accepting the status quo by signing a budget festooned with pork.

Obama spinners insist it was “a leftover budget.” But Iraq was leftover, too, and the president’s trying to end that. This is the first pork-filled budget from a new president who promised to go through the budget “line by line” and cut pork.

On “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, dismissed the bill as “last year’s business,” because most of it was written last year.

But given how angry Americans are, watching their future go up in smoke, the bloated bill counts as this year’s business.

It includes $38.4 million of earmarks sponsored or co-sponsored by President Obama’s labor secretary, Hilda Solis; $109 million Hillary Clinton signed on to; and $31.2 million in earmarks sought by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood with colleagues.

(Even Barack Obama was listed as one of the co-sponsors of a $7.7 million pet project for Tribally Controlled Postsecondary Vocational Institutions until he got his name taken off last week.)

And then there are the 16 earmarks worth $8.5 million that Emanuel put into the bill when he was a congressman, including money for streets in Chicago suburbs and a Chicago planetarium.

Blame it on the stars, Rahm, or on old business. But as Shakespeare wrote in “Lear”: “This is the excellent foppery of the world, that, when we are sick in fortune — often the surfeits of our own behavior — we make guilty of our own disasters, the sun, the moon, and the stars.”

Can Humanity Survive the Safe Cesarean?
Human beings react differently from other mammals to interference with the birth process. When delivery of non-human mammals is disturbed, the effects are immediate and easily detected. For example, when animals give birth by c-section or with an epidural, the general rule is that the mother is not interested in the baby. Among humans, on the other hand, we need extensive statistics to detect what are mere tendencies and risk factors. These are much more complex in our species: We speak and we create cultural milieux. In certain situations, particularly in the perinatal period, human behavior is less directly under the effects of the hormonal balance than the effects of the cultural milieu. For example, a human mother knows when she is pregnant and can anticipate maternal behavior, while other mammals must wait until the birth when they release a flow of love hormones to kindle their attachment to their newborns.
Today, we understand that to have a baby, a woman—like any other mammal—has been programmed to release a cocktail of love hormones. Today the number of women who actually "give birth" to babies and placentas thanks to this hormonal release is ever-decreasing. First, because many women give by birth by cesarean. Second, most of those who give birth vaginally receive pharmacological interventions. Unfortunately substitutes block the release of the natural hormones and do not create the same behavioural benefits. We have to wonder what will happen, in terms of civilization, if this trend continues in future generations. Can humanity survive the safe cesarean?

I don't think a depression would be so bad...

I have been thinking... My Grandmother lived through the depression. She used items until they were not good for anything.

I have been comparing people's trash containers. We have two neighbors that are stark contrasts. Which has got me thinking. An older couple, they do not have ANY trash pickup. They recycle or reuse or compost all their "trash". Then we have three college students that have their trash receptacle full for pick up, which can be twice a week. Then us, we could have pick up once every two weeks.

Are we just such a throw a way society that we don't save our money or are things?

This is what has got me thinking... maybe a depression would force our society to save. I have heard stories: of mothers giving haircuts and saving the hair for pillows or quilts, etc.

Maybe a depression would help us appreciate what we have and cherish it?

The High Cost of Immorality

So, I've been thinking lately about the cost of living in the U.S. today - particularly about how we have so many drags on our economy both directly from immoral and irresponsible behavior (of both corporations and individuals) and from the high cost of the resultant government oversight.

For instance, I was recently discussing with a contractor friend of mine the invasive nature of litigation in the construction field. He related to me that for every project he begins, government regulations require him to procure insurance to ensure that his subcontractors get paid if he fails to pay them. (Apparently this is a BIG issue in contracting; subcontractors are often fighting with general contractors over how much they were supposed to get paid and whether they actually got paid). This insurance costs $3,500.00 a job. After about 4 years of acting as a general contractor, my friend has never needed this insurance because he is always honest, upfront, fair, and well managed. Despite this fact, he has still spent a few tens of thousands of dollars on insurance that he has never needed, but the government still requires.

Of course, that may not be the best example because other factors besides general contractor unscrupulousness may play into the government's decision to require such insurance, but I think it at least illustrates the point.

Anyway, this conversation got me to thinking about the high economic cost of immorality in America today, and I'm curious. If you have any suggestions or ideas of specific ways in which immorality has or is costing us money here in America, please post those ideas here. I'm taking a collection, so to speak...

Louisa takes just one class at school every other day, at my insistance. She loves homeschool and we have a great time learning together, but since she is my last child, I wrestle with the notion that she needs to get out of the house and go to school a little bit. Louisa has described to me her "take" on what makes for popularity in junior high school. She thinks she knows how to be "in", but it wouldn't be a very comfy fit for her, she feels. As she sees it, the requirements include dressing trendy and fashionably, being disinterested in learning, being immodest, and acting catty and "butt-sy" (pushy), acting disrespectful of teachers, showing a big interest in boys and sex and doing a lot of outrageous and unlady-like flirting, saying you hate school, texting your friends all through class without letting the teacher see, talking critically of parents, breaking rules whenever possible, treating your siblings like enemies, not being too smart, and being so saturated in the popular music and PG-13 movies of the current teen culture that you can easily recite movie lines. This is how she feels she would have to act to be well accepted and popular in our current world, outside of her circle of homeschooled friends.

Michelle Duggar is 42. She has two sets of twins and has been pregnant for 12 years of her life. Curry asked her if 18 are enough.

I have not seen the "reality" show of their family... but I love how she speaks of "children as a gift of God" in this article. That is sooooooooo true.
